Every few years, a new natural herb, potion, fruit, or tea comes out, with high-and-mighty claims to cure everything—everything from acne to obesity to cancer. Unlike the legendary snake oil, marketed to the weak and gullible, these more sophisticated-sounding herbal supplements do have some great qualities. Scientific research has corroborated some of the claims and debunked others, but has kept the herbal remedies on the shelves as a great cash cow for companies, and a smart cure-some for consumers.

Obviously, however, not all the claims are true. That’s why the occasional myth-busting needs to take place regarding weight-loss cures. This article is intended to introduce the purpose for myth busting in the world of diet pills. And, no, the main purpose is not to rain on someone’s picnic, or kill some company’s profits. The main purpose is to help you to accomplish the following things.

1. Save your money. With the miraculous powers of some herbal remedies, they come with the price. Whether it’s harvesting them from “deep in the Amazonian jungles” or obtaining them from under ice shelves in Greenland, many of the power-working solutions cost some serious cash. Spending your hard-earned dollars on an ineffective solution is a waste of money.
2. Spare you some disappointment. It can be easy to get excited about the prospect of losing weight fast, as many of the labels claim they can do. Imagine the disappointment when, months later, no change is perceived. I remember taking an herbal supplement one time, which was guaranteed to produce a whole litany of amazing results. After enduring the grass-clipping drink for about a month, disappointment set in. This was not working. The same type of sinking disappointment can come with taking diet pills, too.
3. Concentrate your efforts. Concentrate on doing the right thing. Being distracted by the latest and greatest miracle drug is quite alluring, but it’s important to focus on what you know will work…not what you think might work.

So, how do you cut through the myths and concentrate on the real cure to weight loss?

1. Stay informed. Being an intelligent consumer is always a great way to save your money, fight disappointment, and focus your efforts. This means lots of reading, an investment of time, and ultimately smarter choices. Research the product, find out what is in it, analyze the ingredients, investigate the producer, and make sure it’s legit.
2. Study the results. Any product that has been around for any time should have some professional, independent studies performed on it. These studies, usually involving safeguards and disclaimers, are a great way for you to find out how the product did on its guinea pigs—and how it might work on you. Do some Internet research on reliable scientific websites to find these studies.
