In their eagerness to lose weight and to find a product that helps them do it, most people simply run to the pharmacy, find a product that looks good, and head out the door with high hopes and dreams of a slimmer figure. Usually, a bit more thought and planning should go into a weight-loss program. One of the big dangers of waltzing in and snatching some product that you don’t know much about is that many pharmaceutical producers sell products that are unsafe, untested, and maybe ineffective. This article addresses the myth that anything you find on the shelves of a store is safe for you to take.

The FDA draws a fine (and often indistinguishable) line between “diet pills” and “dietary supplements.” To qualify as a diet pill according to the FDA, a rigorous process of screening and testing must take place. However, many producers can create and sell dietary supplements without FDA approval or testing. Often, these are the products that appear on your pharmacy shelves. In fact, a recent FDA investigation found over seventy such products that could endanger consumer’s health.

Not right for you

Every human body is unique. Because of your individual composition, allergies, existing medications, or medical history, some diet pills may not be safe for you. It is impossible to make a claim that one diet pill is certain to be effective or safe.

Exercising Caution

The best way to avoid harmful or wasteful purchases is to exercise caution in these three areas.

• Arm yourself with knowledge. Be informed about what products work best. Research FDA-approved diet pills or dietary supplements, and find out about their effectiveness, safety, and side effects.
• Read the reviews. In addition to being officially sanctioned, find out if a drug is popularly received. Search for reviews by people who have used the drug. See what they liked about it and what they didn’t like about it.
• Consider herbal supplements. Herbal supplements, generally speaking, have a lower occurrence of health threats than synthesized or manmade substances. Obviously, this is not always the case, and you should exercise extreme care even when using ‘natural’ remedies.
